We sometimes think of air pollution only as an out We sometimes think of air pollution only as an outdoor problem, but often our indoor air is even more polluted than the outdoors.

What can we do:
- check and replace air filters
- avoid scented devices (I.e. candles, air fresheners)
- choose home products like paints that have low VOC’s
- avoid aerosolized products like hair sprays
- go scent free with cleaning products

Under the California setback law, known as SB 1137 Under the California setback law, known as SB 1137, existing wells that fall within the new setback limits may continue to operate, but must closely monitor emissions and take action to reduce dust and limit noise and light pollution.

Numerous scientific studies have documented the significant health risks posed by living in close proximity to oil operations. Air pollutants associated with extraction, including volatile organic compounds and particulate matter, can trigger breathing problems, heart attacks, headaches, and a higher risk of cancer. Other concerns grow from heavy truck traffic, noise, water contamination, and low birth weights for children born to mothers living with the stress of drilling sites nearby.

A 2023 study on cardiovascular health and proximity to urban oil drilling in Los Angeles suggested that living near urban oil drilling sites is associated with hypertension, or high blood pressure. Approximately one-third of the 10 million L.A. County residents live less than one mile from an active oil or gas extraction site, and over 500,000 residents live less than 400 meters away.

Do you have any active extraction sites near you? Tell us in the comments!

We recently submitted a petition to the California We recently submitted a petition to the California Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board (OSHSB) to address a critical safety issue affecting nurses in California: the occupational hazard posed by pill crushing.

We’ve asked the OSHSB - the only agency in California authorized to adopt occupational safety and health standards - to protect California’s 700,000 nurses from the occupational health hazard posed by pill crushing.

Share your pill crushing experiences in the comments below:
• How many different medications do you crush in a typical shift?
• Are you advised to wear PPE while crushing medications?

Parents deserve safe food for their babies. 🍼 A n Parents deserve safe food for their babies. 🍼

A new investigation from Consumer Reports tested 49 baby formulas and found that 26 contained potentially concerning levels of contaminants like arsenic or lead.

The good news: many formulas tested had low or undetectable levels, showing that cleaner products are possible when companies prioritize safety.

Babies deserve food free from preventable contamination.

Stronger testing, transparency, and regulation can help protect the most vulnerable among us.

🚨What California could lose under H.R. 7567 🚨 •Ca 🚨What California could lose under H.R. 7567 🚨

•California’s authority to set stronger pesticide protections than federal minimum standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

•¼-mile school and daycare buffer zones that currently restrict the most hazardous pesticides during school hours

•State-level bans and phaseouts of dangerous pesticides (including previously restricted chemicals like chlorpyrifos, where federally allowed uses remain)

•California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) independent review process. (CA currently requires its own scientific evaluation before pesticides can be used in the state.)

•County Agricultural Commissioner permit system for “restricted materials”

•Stronger protections for farmworkers and rural communities who face the highest exposure risks

•Endangered Species Act safeguards tied to pesticide approvals

•Timely federal safety reassessments of hundreds of pesticides (reviews could be delayed until 2031)

•The right to bring failure-to-warn lawsuits against pesticide manufacturers
(Companies could be shielded from liability if labels follow federal standards)

•Local decision-making power - replacing state and community protections with a one-size-fits-all national standard

Drop a 🛑 in the comments if you believe we deserve stronger protections - not weaker ones.

As of February 20, 2026, the EPA finalized a rule As of February 20, 2026, the EPA finalized a rule repealing the 2024 amendments to MATS, reinstating the 2012 standards.

The Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS) is a set of federal regulations that limit mercury and other toxic emissions from power plants.

This decision affects coal- and oil-fired power plants, which are significant sources of mercury emissions, a neurotoxin that is particularly hazardous for pregnant women and young children leading to birth defects, developmental delays, and learning disabilities.

Join the CALNEJH nursing team in urging the EPA to reverse this decision and reinstate the 2024 standards!

How does this impact the health of your community? Share in the comments!

Lorraine’s Book of the Month: Here Comes the Sun Lorraine’s Book of the Month: Here Comes the Sun

What if a solution to the climate crisis is already rising every morning?

In Here Comes the Sun, acclaimed environmentalist Bill McKibben explores a powerful turning point: solar and wind energy are now the cheapest sources of power on Earth — and growing faster than ever before. This book tells the story of a global shift already underway, from communities installing massive amounts of solar power to California rapidly reducing its reliance on fossil fuels.
More than a climate story, this is a vision of possibility ~ a future where clean energy reshapes our economy, strengthens democracy, and creates a more equitable world powered by something no one can own or hoard: sunlight.

Hopeful, accessible, and deeply timely, this book reminds us that alongside the climate crisis, a clean-energy revolution is unfolding right now.

Tell us what you think of this read in the comments!
