🚨What California could lose under H.R. 7567 🚨 •Ca 🚨What California could lose under H.R. 7567 🚨

•California’s authority to set stronger pesticide protections than federal minimum standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

•¼-mile school and daycare buffer zones that currently restrict the most hazardous pesticides during school hours

•State-level bans and phaseouts of dangerous pesticides (including previously restricted chemicals like chlorpyrifos, where federally allowed uses remain)

•California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) independent review process. (CA currently requires its own scientific evaluation before pesticides can be used in the state.)

•County Agricultural Commissioner permit system for “restricted materials”

•Stronger protections for farmworkers and rural communities who face the highest exposure risks

•Endangered Species Act safeguards tied to pesticide approvals

•Timely federal safety reassessments of hundreds of pesticides (reviews could be delayed until 2031)

•The right to bring failure-to-warn lawsuits against pesticide manufacturers
(Companies could be shielded from liability if labels follow federal standards)

•Local decision-making power - replacing state and community protections with a one-size-fits-all national standard

Drop a 🛑 in the comments if you believe we deserve stronger protections - not weaker ones.

As of February 20, 2026, the EPA finalized a rule As of February 20, 2026, the EPA finalized a rule repealing the 2024 amendments to MATS, reinstating the 2012 standards.

The Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS) is a set of federal regulations that limit mercury and other toxic emissions from power plants.

This decision affects coal- and oil-fired power plants, which are significant sources of mercury emissions, a neurotoxin that is particularly hazardous for pregnant women and young children leading to birth defects, developmental delays, and learning disabilities.

Join the CALNEJH nursing team in urging the EPA to reverse this decision and reinstate the 2024 standards!

Lorraine’s Book of the Month: Here Comes the Sun Lorraine’s Book of the Month: Here Comes the Sun

What if a solution to the climate crisis is already rising every morning?

In Here Comes the Sun, acclaimed environmentalist Bill McKibben explores a powerful turning point: solar and wind energy are now the cheapest sources of power on Earth — and growing faster than ever before. This book tells the story of a global shift already underway, from communities installing massive amounts of solar power to California rapidly reducing its reliance on fossil fuels.
More than a climate story, this is a vision of possibility ~ a future where clean energy reshapes our economy, strengthens democracy, and creates a more equitable world powered by something no one can own or hoard: sunlight.

Hopeful, accessible, and deeply timely, this book reminds us that alongside the climate crisis, a clean-energy revolution is unfolding right now.

Scientific debate is not denial.
It’s how scienc Scientific debate is not denial.

It’s how science works.

Yes - accurately measuring microplastics in the human body is difficult. The field is new, methods are evolving, and scientists are still refining techniques. That back-and-forth is normal and healthy.

But here’s what isn’t in doubt:
- Plastic has been found inside the human body
- Microplastics carry harmful chemicals
- Animal studies consistently show biological harm
- A growing body of peer-reviewed research confirms real health risks

Using uncertainty around exact amounts to delay action misses the point. When exposure is widespread and potential harm is serious, the precautionary principle is the safest path forward for public health.

Plastic is entering our bodies.

Plastic is exposing us to toxic chemicals.

Waiting for “perfect” data puts people at risk.

Comment below what you’re doing in your daily life to reduce microplastics in your body!

Alex Jeffrey Pretti, 37-year-old ICU nurse at the Alex Jeffrey Pretti, 37-year-old ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System, was murdered by federal law enforcement on January 24,2026. It was a senseless, egregious and horrifying act that has enraged us all.

California Nurses for Environmental Health and Justice (CNEHJ) joins our fellow nursing and healthcare organizations in expressing our deepest condolences to Alex’s family, loved ones, co-workers, and the greater community grieving this devastating loss.

Nurses enter this profession to protect life indiscriminately, alleviate suffering, and advocate for people and communities facing harm. Violence against nurses-whether in healthcare settings or in our communities-is a profound societal and public health failure and a violation of our shared medical ethic to do no harm. The killing of Alex Pretti demands transparency, accountability and an independent investigation so the truth is known and justice pursued.

We acknowledge that many others have lost their lives due to brutal immigration enforcement practices, including deaths in ICE custody and detention facilities. We demand justice for all who have been harmed or killed.

We stand firmly against violence in all its forms. In honoring Alex Pretti’s life and service, we recommit ourselves to collective action that advances safety, accountability and justice for our nurses, patients and all impacted communities.
